One day Charlie, Tommo and Molly were fishing down in the brook at the river when a yellow aeroplane flew in. The kids talked to the pilot, reassured him he was lost and then received some humbugs as a thank you. This incidence foreshadows that their world was about to change, considerably. The aeroplane is likewise an example of the outside world and advancement of technology coming into the lives of those in rural England. “It was the first aeroplane any of us had ever seen. We’d heard about them, seen pictures of them, but up until that day I don’t think I really believed they were real” boasted Tommo as he remembered sighting the plane for the first time.
