Summary: Calypso, The Sweet Nymph
Odysseus starts off stuck on Calypso’s island and has been stuck there for 10 years. Athean goes to Zeus and convinces him to let Odysseus go. Athena is able to convince Zeus so he sends Hermes, the messenger of the Gods, to go tell Calypso to release Odysseus. Calypso releases Odysseus, Odysseus becomes immediately cheerful. Calypso being upset forces Odysseus to sleep with her, because the Gods don’t like it when the Goddesses sleep with mortals. Even though Odysseus slept with her he still wept for his wife the entire night.Calypso then gives Odysseus supplies to build a raft and food to live. Odysseus builds the raft and leaves the island.
Obstacles as universal Themes:
1.Resisting temptation
Odysseus stayed strong for years without his wife. Even without seeing his wife for a long time he still longed to see her, Calypso had tempeted him to sleep with her multiple times but he still resisted. “Son of Laertes, versatile Odysseus, after these years with me, you still desire your home? I believe this is the theme because the whole time he tells his story about his journey that he took. He brags a little about his men, even though they died in the storm. “This was an army, trained to fight on horseback or, where the ground required, on foot.” (part 1: 161,162). This shows pride and honor because he is talking about his men being trained and strong men. Also, by saying this it shows that Odysseus is even stronger than his own men, which he probably to show some pride about himself.
Figurative Language
Personification- “Sheep after sheep they butchered by the surf, and shambling cattle, feasting-while fugitives went inland, running to call to arms the main forces of Cicones.” (Part 1 157-160) This is personification because it gives the surf the power to buter things while the sea can’t literary butter
