The Crucible Act 1 Dialectical Journal As you read Act 1, keep a “dialectical journal.” Dialectical is “the art or practice of arriving at the truth through logical arguments.” Therefore, you will use your insights and perceptions to “argue” with the characters, situations, and events in the play in order to come to some understanding or truth. As you “converse” with the text, you will develop a better understanding of what is going on, what motivates the characters, and underlying conflicts. Write down your thoughts, questions, insights, and ideas while you read.…

The latest part of the reading has gone by really slow as the past 5 chapters only seem to be in to two different settings during a single night. It seems like Holden is recollecting way more than a real human being would be able to recollect. He is telling us every single possible detail about where he is and what he is experiencing. I have also found it hard to connect to this portion of the book as he his dunk for a good bit of it. The part I was able to connect with the book is Phoebe as she acts similar to my younger brother.…

People do not tend to stand up for others or for themselves, because they think people will judge them. Letting the world know who you are is all that matters, be proud of yourself and have goodness in your heart. This reminds me of the time I stood up to and for my dad who I love, but likes to blame things on me because he has a drinking problem. He did not like the way I raised myself nor was he proud of the person I am. This is kind of like Elizabeth Proctor who stood up for someone she loved, but also for herself.…

Scarlet Letter Journal Analysis Journal #2: In the novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the scarlet letter negatively affects Hester because it excludes her from society, labels her as the embodiment of sin in the town, and grants her a lot of disrespect among the people. Hester lived in a cottage that was far away from the whole town and completely surrounded by woods, which already made her feel separate from the community. Not only that, but every time she went to the busy Boston area, her contact with society made her feel “banished, and as much alone as if she inhabited another sphere” (Hawthorne 78). Hester is obviously suffering from isolation already, due to her sin and the scarlet letter setting her apart from everyone…
