One To One Assistant Reflection Paper

This week, Joseph’s one to one assistant was absent for several days. Joseph needs a lot of assistance especially when transitioning from place to place due to his physical disability. This was definitely apparent during our fire drills this week. Thus, I went to all of his preps with him and assisted him throughout the week. Joseph’s inappropriate behaviors have also increased this week. He was seen hitting his peers and adults several times throughout week. However, when his one to one assistant was present on Friday, he did not exhibit any inappropriate behaviors.

It made me wonder what would have happened if I did not go to prep with him. As a teacher, I think it is my responsible to make sure that my students are safe and that their needs are met.
In regards to Joseph, when possible I will prepare him before hand on changes of schedule or routines. I will also make an effort to include him in the process of planning for the changes so he feels a part of the process. Finally, I will encourage him use his words to verbalize frustrations or ask for personal space when he feels like he is becoming upset due to a change in routine. This will perhaps prevent him from hurting others when he becomes

Introduction Functional Communication Training (FCT) “develops alternative behaviors that are sensitive to the EOs that maintain the problem behavior” (Cooper et al., p.497); EOs are establishing operations and FCT does not seek to change EOs. FCT uses differential reinforcement of alternative behaviors (DRA) because FCT interventions help the participant to create an alternative form of communication as an antecedent to the previous problem behavior. The DRA of communication provides the reinforcer that has maintained the problem behavior (screaming, falling to the floor), which provides extinction of the problem behavior and a replacement behavior that contains the same reinforcement. “FCT can be viewed as an application of mand training”…

When observing a special education classroom I am not only observing the class, but I am observing a glimpse into my future as a teacher. I was privileged enough to observe a multi-needs intermediate classroom with students who range from eight to ten year olds at Hope D. Wall School who have moderate to server learning disorders and physical handicaps. The purpose of the multi-need classroom is for the teacher to assess which path the student will take after the year is over. For an example some students might need more intensive guidance during their education, while other students attend life skills classes in order to prepare for life outside of school. While I was observing the class, I was fortunate enough to witness the students participate…

A teacher’s goal is to maximize his or her student’s potential. Traditionally, the biggest challenge for students with disabilities was to meet their needs in the areas of social, behavioral, cognitive, perceptive and motor skills (Adebisi et al. 14). A learning disability is defined by the Schwab Foundation as a person who is diagnosed by a professional with a difficulty as a result of a CNS dysfunction in the areas or reading, writing, math, science, reasoning speaking, or listening. In order to meet the diverse needs of these students, they were traditionally removed from the mainstream classroom and placed in a separate classroom to learn. Although this was the best way to meet the students’ academic needs, their social needs were grossly…

The first skill that was used to engage my client was using an open ended question at the beginning of my interview. According to Hohman (2002), “open-ended questions are those that have a variety of possible answers and do not limit the client” (p.20) using this strategy allows the client to explore his own thoughts and it encourages the client to do most of the talking. I started my conversation with my client by asking a simple open question for example “how was his day going ?” later I saw myself asking deeper questions such as “You mention that your brother is an alcoholic, how is your relationship with your brother?” this allowed me to listen to my client story in his own words and to keep the interviewing flowing.…
