Diabetic foot ulcers are a chronic and costly problem. This researcher proposes a solution/intervention to this problem with the use of NPWT on patients with diabetic foot ulcers to decrease healing time and high costs. According to Jarett (2013), NPWT plays an important role in the treatment of this complex problem over other standard moist methods used. Jarrett (2013) also states that it is well documented that NPWT has a higher level of limb salvage than any other methods used to treat foot ulcers.
NPWT are devices that consist of specialized dressings that include adhesive drapes and open-cell foam that is cut to fill the wound. This machine transmits constant or intermittent pressure throughout the wound for optimal healing. “Cyclic irrigation of the wound optimizes healing by removing devitalized tissue, debris, infectious agents, and preparing the wound bed for closure” (Heitzman, 2011, p. 251). In several studies, NPWT has not only proven its effectiveness in healing wounds through wound granulation, faster healing time, and reduced amputations, but is cost effective for patients (Heitzman, 2011).
