Causes and risk factors of type 2 diabetes
Genetics and lifestyle are the most common risk factors for type 2 diabetes. Being overweight, smoking, lack of physical activity, high alcohol intake and high blood pressure are other common risk factors. Insulin resistance is the most common form of type 2 diabetes. The pancreas tends to still make insulin but its either not enough or the body just doesn’t know what to do with it. Without insulin the sugars (glucose) can’t get to the cells of the body so it builds up in the bloodstream causing high blood sugar.
