Diabetes Mellitus Diabetes Mellitus is more commonly referred to as Type 2 Diabetes. Type 2 Diabetes is a metabolic disorder that arises when an excess amount of insulin collects in the blood stream. Type 2 Diabetes is caused by the body’s cells inability to process and use insulin that the pancreas produces (American Diabetes Association, 2013). Unlike Type 1 Diabetes, Type 2 Diabetes mostly affects adults, but can affect adolescents and teenagers. Type 2 Diabetes is diagnosed using several types of blood tests, Type 2 Diabetes can lead to damaging effects on the body, Type 2 Diabetes has different treatment options to help those who are suffering, Type 2 Diabetes can be prevented if the right steps are taken, and there is ongoing research …show more content…
The first type of blood test that can be used in the diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes is known as a Glycated Hemoglobin Blood Test. This test monitors the amount of blood sugar attached to Hemoglobin, a protein found in red blood cells that carries oxygen, over a few months. Results from this test should be below 5.7 percent to be considered normal. This test is especially useful in diagnosing Type 2 Diabetes, however this test cannot one hundred percent accurate if the patient is pregnant (Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care, 2014).
The second type of blood test that can be used to test for Type 2 Diabetes is known as a Random Blood Sugar Test. This test is pretty self-explanatory; it is a blood test that is taken at a nonspecific or random time to test for Type 2 Diabetes. Results from this test should be below 200mg/dL to be considered normal (Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care, …show more content…
The retina converts the images seen by the eye and converts the images over to electrical signals to be interpreted by the brain. The pressure on the blood vessels in the eye causes damage to the optic nerve and the retina, thus causing the patient to lose their vision (American Diabetes Association, 2013). Type 2 Diabetes can also cause damage to the nerves of those suffering with Type 2 Diabetes. Damage caused by prolonged exposure to an excess of glucose in the blood to the nerve fibers in the body leads to nerve damage in those who are enduring Type 2 Diabetes (American Diabetes Association, 2013). Even though Type 2 Diabetes can cause immense and lasting damage to one’s body, there are treatment options out there to help those who are suffering with Type 2
