Many chronic diseases are rising and becoming more common, such as heart disease, respiratory disease, such as COPD and many autoimmune diseases. One chronic disease that is rising and becoming more common is diabetes. Diabetes develops as a result of an imbalance in blood sugar levels.
An increase in diabetes has proven that the disease is becoming more common than before. More than 220 million people worldwide have been known to have diabetes and the World Health Organization predicts that the number of diabetes will increase much higher by 2030.(World Health Organization, 2010).
There are two main types of diabetes which is diabetes type 1, which is known as insulin-dependant diabetes and diabetes type 2 which is known as non-insulin dependant diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is known to be more common among people who have the disease. (Diabetes research institute).
The pathophysiology of type 1 diabetes is that type 1 is defined as an autoimmune disease, which the body’s own immune system attacks and destroys beta cells in the pancreas which is responsible for production of insulin. Metformin is one main medication prescribed for type 2 diabetes, the medication makes the body respond to insulin. Sulfonylureas are other medications which help the body secrete more insulin.
