Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko presents to us that there is a necessity for ceremonies and traditions in the world that we live in. She teaches us that forgetting those traditions and ceremonies can bring hardship, that traditions and ceremonies must be constantly changing with the world, and that blindly going through the motions of a tradition can bring dangers. Tayo, the main character, learns the hard way that forgetting ceremonies and traditions can cause hardships. Towards the beginning of the story, Tayo blames himself for the reason there is drought.…
Several centuries after Siddhartha Gautama, also known as Buddha, died, Buddhism made its emergence into China in the first century CE. Initially, the spread of Buddhism was responded to positively by the people of China and they adopted its ideals. However, as Buddhism continued to expand, the government, specifically of the Tang Dynasty, started to turn against Buddhists and even went as far as to blame them for problems within the state. As a result, the people felt compelled to diverge from Buddhist beliefs and became xenophobic to those who did not abandon those beliefs.…
Although lower classed people supported and defended Buddhism in China, others with higher social status and elites took a xenophobic position on Buddhism and attempted to eradicate it by pointing out various flaws. As Buddhism spread though China people began to react differently to the new forms of teaching. People who were in lower positions of social hierarchy however, openly accepted Buddhism as a teaching and as a religion. Zhi Dun, states “He will behold the Buddha and be enlightened in his spirit, and then he will enter Nirvana.”…
Humans have long valued the connection between the soul’s health and their beliefs. This connection is what keeps people secure and strong. In Native American culture, traditions serve as a link between the mystical worlds and the natural world. The mystical world is filled with spirits from nature that ensure the balance of nature and the prosperity of the earth for humans in their natural world. Through prayers and rituals, this link provides individuals with a firm foundation which strengthens their beliefs and maintains the fragile balance of nature.…
“Sana, Sana, Colita de Rana,” is a silly Hispanic chant which literally translates into “heal, heal, little frog's tail.” My mother, she would sing these few words while rubbing my injured knee with her soft worn hands. My pain would instantly vanish. I would be in awe, after all, my mother just performed a magic. She took away any evidence of pain.…
There was a total of eight members and two guests. I took notice that there was not a speaker at the meeting. Instead it was a group of people viewing each other as equals. That was different for me, because I was used to seeing a speaker in group.…
Hinduism believe in the relationship between people and Dharma. A place that we call our world is the ‘conventional world’, where we experience and observe different phenomena; interact and encounter different objects through our senses. This is the reality we easily understand because we can sense it. Objects and ourselves are carried through by the senses. Touching, seeing and feeling prove its existence.…
When I was in the first grade, I was considered a goody two-shoes because I followed all the rules and got good grades, but I never really believed that I deserved the nickname until one day on the playground. My friends and I decided to play Follow the Leader. As we continued to play the game, we started to sing all of the songs we had learned in class. I began to wonder, are we allowed to sing outside during recess?…
To make group members more comfortable in sharing ideas it is a good idea to confront others with an encouraging spirit ( Loria,2013). This helps in making group members relaxed enough to share their…
Last year, my family had a shaman ceremony to protect our family. A shaman ceremony is when a shaman goes into the spiritual world to talk to the bad spirits to stop making us sick. We called a shaman to come in to do a ceremony for us. We killed two pigs for the ceremony and it was mainly to protect my family from the spiritual world. Before the ceremony, we would call our relatives, families, and friends to come and help.…
explains “Dharma is therefore based on the sustainable and just use of resources for fulfilling needs. Ecological balance and social justice are intrinsic to right livelihood, to dharma” (Shiva 375). Shiva implores the understanding of the destructive trend humans, specifically industrial corporations, are following and will keep following if changes aren’t made. Shiva is trying to have readers gain an understanding in the negative impact they are having on the earth, but she is also hoping to search for a better alternative.…
There isn’t one word, phrase or term that can define folklore, but one group that mirrors what a definition of folklore could look like is the adult Girl Scout “troop” that meets weekly in Bowling Green Kentucky. The group is made up of 12 members who were former Girl Scouts but paid their membership fee to become lifelong Girl Scout Members. I had the pleasure of interviewing the woman who created the group and has kept it going for several years. Her name is Elizabeth Brown and she was in Girl Scouts for 15 years. While interviewing Ms. Brown I observed how the group communicated and shared their traditions, values, and beliefs with insiders and outsiders.…
Hinduism is most likely the oldest and most complex religion in the entire world. Traces of the religion go back as far as the third millennium B.C.E. The possible religious views of Hinduism are effectively infinite due to the number of gods both major and minor, priests and temples. Nearly 80 percent of the India population consider themselves Hindu and there are at least 30 million practitioners outside of India making this religion the third largest after Christianity and Islam. The word “Hinduism” is a collection of various traditions that are closely related and share common themes yet they do not constitute an integrated set of beliefs or practices.…
In Hinduism, the concepts of dharma and karma are essential components of the religion, and they are invariably interlinked, both with each other, and the structure of the Hindu community, known as the Caste System. The term dharma is problematic in translation, with a range of suggestions such as ‘law,’ ‘duty,’ and ‘religion’ (Flood, G. 2004, p.52). The term, in short, refers to ritual and moral behaviours which are necessary to uphold to maintain cosmic order, or rta. (Flood, G. 2004, p.53; Rodrigues, H. 2017, p.30). Karma is the concept which expresses that any moral action, good or bad, will have consequences in this life or in a future rebirth (Rodrigues, H. 2017, p.63-4).…
I do not remember exactly the particular day but all I remember was that it was very humid and the sky was cloudy. It was just a few days before I joined first grade and I had just arrived home from my neighbors. I was utilizing my last few days of freedom and hence was tired and hungry. I had rushed home looking forward to my grandmother’s food and playing time.…
