In the book, “The Suburb Reader” by Becky W. Nicolaides and Andrew Wiese, while reading chapter 9, Postwar America, there were many things that got my attention while reading it. This chapter talks about how there was many Americans that move from the city to the suburban areas during that Great Depression and the World War II because of the economy status during this time. These wars made the housing shortage in a very crisis levels. During this time because of the need that all these Americans were facing, many of them needed it to live in hard conditions. For instance, “Millions of families were force to double up, while others found makeshift, grain bins, and converted chicken coops.”…

Mrs. Joseph Van Bliven was fortunate: a bubble bath loving woman who enjoyed treating herself for pleasure, and perhaps staging crimes to receive money? Mysterious broken glass, a rummaged through jewelry box, and statements that do not add up with the time frame- all of these lead to an implausible excuse for Mrs. Van Bliven’s confusion as to why her necklace “disappeared”. To begin with, even the laws of science prove that if you push something, it will move in that direction. Mrs. Van Bliven did not begin to think when she broke the window of her balcony door. She broke the door from the inside of her hotel room, trying to create a crime scene that would show someone broke in.…

In some families there are certain objects that are passed on from generation to generation. A three golden chained emerald necklace was the precious object passed on. In the Garth family, Celia’s parents had died and passed on an emerald necklace to Celia, which her father had given her mother when they got married. This necklace had been passed from generation to generation ever since the first Garths came over from England. The necklace has three parts that are important to the book Celia Garth by Gwen Bristow: the emerald shows the poison in Celia’s life, the color green displays toughness and masculinity, and the gold chains symbolize Celia being generous by giving the necklace over to Roy, her cousin, and the success of Roy getting…

This document details the request from many townsmen of Concord to put an article for the erection of new stables on public land, specifically the Common, upon the Sabbath in the warrant for the town meeting for the month of May. This document was written April 10, 1773, one month before the desired request would be discussed at town meeting. It is addressed directly to the selectmen of the town of Concord and signed “your humble servants” as a sign of respect, and has the signatures of several men on the bottom showing evidence for a desire for more stables. Several of these signatures are from the Wheeler family, a prominent family in early Concord with lineage tracing back to it’s founding. This document was written during a transitional period in American history, when the colonies, and especially Massachusetts, were slowly considering going to war with their oppressive governing body, the Kingdom of England.…

Mrs. Van Bliven clearly stole her own necklace because the crime scene was not legitimate and because she needed to collect the insurance money from the necklace. First of all, the French doors were securely locked before the necklace was stolen. This evidence is important to proving Mrs. Van Bliven guilty of stealing her own necklace because no one else could have gotten in and stolen the necklace if the doors were locked. In addition, if Schmidt, Mrs. Van Bliven’s neighbor at the hotel, had tried to access the hotel room by tampering with the door, there would have been physical evidence- such as a broken door knob- at the crime scene. After consulting the crime scene photographs, it was clear the only tampering with the door could have been done from the inside.…

The short story A & P, written by John Updike, is different because of the way that Updike is able to write in present and past tense from the perspective of a teenager thinking back to his days working in a grocery store. The story is about some girls who walk into the store wearing nothing but their bathing suits. These girls draw everybody’s attention away from their work and onto them simply because of the way that they’re dressed. Besides the distraction, most of the conflict does not occur until the store manager notices the girls and scolds them about their attire. The comedic patter of the story is very evident with the way the narrator gives the girls and others in the store little nicknames that are almost somewhat offensive.…
