Philosophy of Teaching Statement
Education means different things to different people. To some education means better opportunity, accomplishment, growth and maturity. To others it just means freedom from poverty or more money at their job. All these meanings are valid parts of education. Merriam-Webster defines education as the knowledge and development result from an educational process. In today, technological age the importance of an education is lost on many youths. Most young kids inspire to be You-tubers instead of doctors, lawyers or scientist. Also, the high cost of schooling and low paying job market as made education unattractable to many people. Francis Parker was the founder of the first progressive elementary school in the United States. Mr. Parker opened the school in 1899 which became a private experimental school, the theory was a success and an additional school was then opened. The Quincy Method was an approach to progressive education thought out by Mr. Parker himself. His method stated that he would give less care to memorization, eradicate severe discipline, including group work and teach the subjects of science and arts. His method was the most successful of its time that society found it hard to believe. Mr. Parkers students were given state-mandated testing and the results were phenomenal. His unorthodox way of teaching is a success that teachers have yet to master. As a growing educator, my plan is to create an environment where the children learn not only from the books but one another. Watson is a theorist that focuses primarily on behaviorism, although he has nothing to do with progressivism, I believe that his theory explains a part of my philosophy. Mr. Watson’s states that "life's most complicated acts are but combinations of these simple stimulus- response patterns of behavior” (Watson, 1999). After researching his theory on behaviorism, I concluded that every stimulus creates a response and that said, a response can be traced back to what stimulus caused it. I believe that this is certain in any educational setting because as time progresses a teacher can identify what form of directions are working and which are not with a child or group of children. By becoming aware on Watson’s theory, I can easily identify which student is not grasping the subject I am teaching and why my choice of directional strategy is not responding to the
