For “Devotions” by Bruce Snider, the first critical strategy I used was the formalist approach. For a formalist critic some of the questions you have in your head while reading a story are, what's the structure of the work, how does it use figurative language to help out with the meaning of the story, and what imagery is used. So while I was reading “Devotions,” I had all these questions in the back of my mind and acted like I was a real critic. So from my assessments, the structure of this work is poetry, and they use a lot of imagery some of the imagery they use in the poem I when the talk about the sun is rising or the castrating of the bulls I can picture these in my head which makes the poem even better. Figurative language was presented in this poem to contribute to making readers understand the theme.

But for the first critical strategy I used was the historical approach, there were a couple of places pointed out that had to do with history. First, the author used a couple of dates in this short story that references World War 1. So, in the beginning, I thought this short story had to do something with war.
For the second critical strategy, I used the psychological approach. While I was reading, I was thinking about the main character state of mind if he's mentally ok. Because the main character did just came back from war, so you don't know where his mind maybe. The main character might have been crazy because he would go around pleading to people to tell him what's in the envelope he got. No one with a right mind would do that. I also thought about the author personal experiences in life, author R.K.Narayan is Indian just like the main character, so maybe he saw something like this going on where he is
