This lack of attention can cause stress, angst, and resentment that could be affecting Maureen. Rex took away every pleasurable thing the family had; for example, one year, Rex ruined the family's Christmas tree by burning it down in a drunken rage (Walls 115). Rex also was supposed to provide for the family, and he worked hard for his money. Yet rarely, if ever, did he spend it on the family. He was constantly buying alcohol to feed his craving (Walls 210).
When Maureen was 12 she moved to New York City and lived with Lori (Walls 251). This is clearly an uncommon move as she was just a child and her sisters and brothers questioned if it was a good idea. Yet they decided it would be best for her to leave her parents (Walls 251). They assumed that it would be good for her, yet it is very possible that it could have affected her negatively as it left her without her parents throughout her teenage years.
Maureen recently moved to California after being released from a mental hospital that she was in for a year because of the stabbing of her mom (Walls 275). She is living her life almost completely isolated from her siblings and parents (other than the occasional talks with Rose Mary), and told her family that she does not want them to see her (Walls 276). The rest of her family lives in New York
