In the novel “The Devil in the White City” Larson disperses the uses of irony throughout the passage to show readers an effect of industrialization. Before cities started to form there were small towns where the residents knew each other fairly well and communicated regularly. The evolution of not only an agricultural based society, but of technology terminated the once so connected nation. Holmes getting caught only because of fraud and not because of the countless murders he committed; even after people got suspicious and started talking to each other, was just an example of how little news got across through conversation. The reader is able to see the irony that while technology made communicating with each other easier, people started talking
