Devil Diseases: The Way They Eat

Decent Essays
Meat! Tasmanian devils are carnivorous; which means to only eat meat. They’ll consume rodent-sized animals or birds or snakes. When they get food they eat it-all. Yes, the mammal doesn’t waste a bite, they consume everything on the animal’s body.

Action The creatures have a way of getting food though. A lot of the time they must fight for it, and when they do, they use their wild temper and sharp teeth. They have a very angry way of dealing with predators or who they think are threats, or fighting when mating.

Home, Sweet Home These animals are mostly nocturnal, meaning staying in and or sleeping during the day, and eating and mating at night. They “hide” in empty, dark cave-like areas, and watch out for predators.

The Tasmanian devil is an apex predator and the largest marsupial carnivore. Devil Facial Tumor Disease (DFTD) is a highly aggressive, transmissible cancer that is decimating the Tasmanian devil population and threatening the species with extinction in as little as thirty years (Brüniche-Olsen et al., 2016). The disease first showed up in 1996 and a second transmissible cancer in devils was discovered in 2014. This disease has since declined the population 95% in some areas while spreading to more than 80% of their range (Hollings, et al., 2014). Research towards a vaccine will help to facilitate the reintroduction of these animals into the wild and would provide a new era in wildlife management and research.…
