Deviance is any behavior that violates cultural norms. What are norms you ask? Norms are guidelines or expectations for how we should behave in our day to day lives. Most members of society will accept social norms and expect others to do the same. Being expected to do something can put a lot of pressure on an individual. Our perception of behavior reflects a process of socialization that occurs over the course of our lives. We are expected to obey the laws so most people do. Society trains you not to rob convenience stores or cheat on tests. I believe that people disobey the laws because of all the pressure that’s put on them to do the right thing. Being labeled deviant can have serious consequences on that person’s life. Sociologists have pointed out that definitions of what is deviant range from society to society. They can also range from time period to time period. Chewing gum in Singapore is illegal unless used for medical purposes. Discovering that chewing gum is illegal in Singapore really shocked me. In the U.S., they sell chewing gum in almost every stores. Almost every has chewed it at some point in their lives. Most of us would be arrested if we lived in Singapore. I found this video to be very interesting and informative. This speaker seemed like she wanted to be there and she knew what she was talking about. Overall, I really enjoyed watching this video.

A student talking on their phone during class time can be an example of deviance. Everyone is deviant at some point during our lives. No one is absolutely perfect. We weren’t born to be perfect. Deviance can help solidify what the rules are. Basically, if we didn’t have deviance there wouldn’t be any specific rules. When norms become formalized, we call them laws. For example, if you hit or attack a co worker you are likely to go to jail. I believe without laws the world would be chaotic. Everyone would be doing the own thing and there would be no order. I found this video to be both informative and interesting.
