Deviance is classified by sociologists as a particular behavior, belief or specific characteristic that society, in general, would find out of the norm. Additionally, these beliefs, behaviors and characteristics usually cause a negative reaction to be generated by those who believe that it is deviant behavior. Moreover, the deviant person’s character becomes stigmatized and tainted. Behavior may seem deviant in one specific circle in society and accepted in another. In essence, the rules are set by the societies and govern what we may and may not do, how we should think, what we should believe, and even how we should look. Thirty years ago it was rarely thought that marijuana would be on the verge of being legalized across the nation in the future. Until recently, it was considered against the law and deviant behavior in all 50 states and territories. Currently, 23 states have legalized the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes. For medicinal purposes, the once deviant behavior is now being accepted. It is primarily used to lessen the pain and probably the cares of a person with a disease or disorder. This is definitely changing the culture of America in its social structure. Furthermore, it is now going beyond the medicinal uses of marijuana. Several states have passed legislation that legalizes the recreational use of marijuana. This is another strong indicator that the legalization of marijuana is being accepts as non-deviant behavior by more and more people. Additionally, many politicians are for the legalization, not for the deviance of the behavior, but for the tax revenue that the legalization generates.
