The operationalization of the independent variable in experiment 1 was the race of the applicants. The interview situation was arranged to give the subject-interviewers the opportunity to treat their applicants differently without knowledge. The experimenters accomplished this by having their behavior monitored and by not informing them when the applicant was going to be white or black. The operationalization of the dependent variable in experiment 1 was immediacy behaviors and related behaviors. The distance between the interviewer and the applicant, their eye contact, any forward leaning or the placement of the shoulders measured the immediacy behaviors. The reason for this is because according to the introduction when a person shows physical differences like a disability then there is less immediacy when interacting with another person. Another reason is one person’s belief in another person can cause the other person to then act in line with those beliefs.
