Deviance Violates Significant Social Norms

1. Deviance is any behavior, belief, or condition that violates significant social norms in a society or group in which it occurs. These behaviors, beliefs, or conditions can be based on a person’s intentional or unintentional actions. Individuals are seen deviant when he/she goes against the norm. Deviance is relative when an act becomes deviant when it is socially defined as such. Folkways are basic conventions followed in society because it is what we are used to doing. An example of violating a folkway is not saying, “God Bless you” when someone sneezes. Mores are rules to do with our social rules and values. An example of violating mores is not being honest or not having integrity (some cases deal with the law). All deviant acts/conditions are not always criminal because certain deviances just go against society’s rules but are not breaking the law. Taboos are seen evil in society (Ex. I just pretend not to hear them ask me to hold the elevator. Most people do not pay it any attention and just catch the next elevator up. Although, sometimes people catch on to me purposely closing the elevator door and they get upset. I close the door on the elevator so much, half of the time I do not even notice that I am even doing it. This deviant act would not be considered as a norm because the normal thing to do is to hold the elevator when you see someone coming.
2. The war on drugs has corrupted this country. In this country, there are more people who are on drugs than we think. Americans are the driving force of the war on drugs. Drugs have always been around since the early years. America should focus on making drugs legal because marijuana has less effects than alcohol. Drugs should be taken off the black market to make it legal and
