Developmentally Appropriate Teaching Strategies

Diversity encompasses numerous characteristics including socio-economic background, ethnicity, special needs, gender, and giftedness (Cazden, 2001). Today, classrooms are getting more varied and diverse with students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, and students with a disability. It appears that teachers must meet the needs of all students successfully and individually to effectively teach a classroom of diverse students. In order to create solutions to their unmet needs, teachers must be willing to use a team problem solving problem and able to communicate efficiently. However, creating an effectual collaboration among every member of staff in a school can be demanding and challenging. The degree and level of successful education change is an undeviating result of the level that instructors and teachers interact with each other. Therefore, the team must be in a position to first practice and learn various communication skills such as, listening carefully to others, being tolerant to various viewpoints, and understanding culturally based differences in both nonverbal and verbal communication.
The third challenges involved with ensuring that teaching strategies are appropriate for culturally diverse children is implementing culturally responsive teaching. One paramount question educators should ask themselves is “what is culturally responsive teaching?” Scholars note that many teachers do not implement cultural responsive teaching across the world. It has, therefore, been a huge challenge for the teachers to make connections with the student as individuals while also putting to consideration cultural contexts that persuade their interactions. In addition, teachers must understand that children at different levels learn different things. All teachers irrespective of social level should meet the needs of their
