The Importance Of DAP In Education

Improved Essays
My research was focused on developmentally appropriate practices or DAP. DAP guidelines are broken into several different categories which can assess a teachers’ professional practices in their classroom. DAP is assessed based on students’ physical activities in a classroom, their social and emotional behaviors that occur from cognitive development inside a DAP centered classroom, student learning just to name a few. Based upon my findings in the five journal articles that I read regarding DAP, there is not a definite correlation to whether or not DAP has a positive or negative influence on student achievement, social behaviors and learning. More research on DAP needs to be conducted in order to justify its use in classrooms. The most obvious …show more content…
This is known, because all the journals I found on this topic were within the last fifteen years. Although, there is not a definite answer on whether or not DAP is connected to higher student achievement, there have been both positive and negative results in research. Teachers who use DAP in their classrooms do have a better understanding of their students and has had a positive result in this study. They know when students are learning, have mastered a skill, or need help when struggling and what strategies to use. I think this is a research topic that should be continued to be looked at because I think there needs to be more studies done to see if this is something teachers and schools should be concerned with implementing in their classrooms. Researchers should want to also continue this study to see if a definite answer can be found. I personally think if there is a positive link between DAP and student achievement, then we need to make sure teachers are implementing this type of student led learning. If there is no correlation, then we shouldn’t be focused on student led learning solely, but having the teachers actually teach for the purpose of student learning. There might even be a higher student achievement linked to DAP if both types of learning are happening, teacher led first, then student led learning for further discovery of a …show more content…
My research question would be, “Does DAP have a positive impact on higher student achievement?” I would want to conduct my research in the Duval County Public School District (DCPS). I would use grades three through five, because most of the research was conducted in the lower grade levels. This might raise some new questions, concerns and answers on this topic. The reason for using DCPS in my research studies would be because it is one of the largest counties in Jacksonville, Florida. Duval County Public Schools has a wide range when looking at demographics, a large number of families with different income levels, ethnicity and DCPS is a lower performing county. There are many factors that play a role in whether or not DAP is successfully linked to student achievement and social/emotional skill levels. I think DCPS would give the research a good run for its money so to speak. I think there would be a lot of interesting information found as a result of this research

An important element of a Positive Behavioral Support System (PBSS) is the readiness of staff to help implement the system. Critical to this process are the attitudes of teachers, their understanding and use of research-based classroom management strategies, and how they see their students responding to classroom and school discipline. Teachers of Lacy Elementary completed the Scale of Effective School Discipline and Safety Questionnaire (SESDS) to determine if the school is ready to move forward with the implementation of Positive Behavioral Support System (PBSS). 58 items are surveyed and organized into 5 categories: Teachers’ Effective Classroom Management Skills, Teachers’ Positive Behavioral Interactions and Respect, Holding Students…

Positive Behavior Support Systems (PBSS) are composed of a school wide approach using evidence based strategies that focus on effectively decreasing inappropriate behavior, while increasing academic performance and safety (Kincaid, Childs, Blase, & Wallace, 2007). The preparedness of a school is crucial in order to implement an effective Positive Behavior Support System. Preparation for implementation of a PBSS system requires staff buy-in, as well as communication, education of logic, and time management (Netzel & Eber, 2003). Lacy Elementary School is looking to implement a PBSS program in their school. The school administered The Scale of Effective School Discipline and Safety (SESDS) Questionnaire to their staff.…

A.H., Brown, M. P., Corrigan, W. M., 2013). This evidence based approach will improve aptitudes and attitudes essential to higher achievement focusing on the whole child, creating safe and socially and emmotioonally supportive climates, and engaging parents and the community (Alessandro, et al., 2013). This model promotes voluntary behavior intended to benefit another. According to a study done by Kincaid, D., Childs, K., Blasé, K. A., & Wallace, F. (2007), such an approach gives students specific behavior skills, provides opportunity to practice skills in a natural school environment, and reinforces students positively for displaying these skills in the classroom setting. Lacy Elementary has lacked respect amongst students as mentioned before and this could help in taking a proactive step for the betterment of the schools culture to promote a better classroom environment.…

The relationship between developmentally appropriate practice, play and learning are that all three help a child learn self-esteem, self-control and knowing what is typical at each age and stage of early development while learning and having fun at the same time. DAP is Developmentally Appropriate Practice that is facilitated by a teacher where the child is taught at an age appropriate level skills necessary for growth through play in which infants, toddlers, children with special needs are taught academics by means of play. Thus leading to “DAP specifies the provision of active learning experiences, intentionally supported by knowledgeable and responsive teachers using a wide repertoire of teaching strategies.” (Gestwicki, 2014, p.30)…

Effective teachers can establish a well-managed classroom and empower students through the evidence-based practices of positive behavior support using scientific and artistic methods. Such evidence-based classroom practices as compiled in the Effective Classroom PBS Plan include creating a classroom community, maximizing structure and predictability, posting and teaching expectations, and using a continuum of strategies to acknowledge appropriate or inappropriate behavior some of which may be proactive or reactive. Teachers who are not empowering the students are likely engaged in practices that are ineffective resulting in the opposite effect of disempowerment. Professional practices should be frequently evaluated to determine if actions…

PBIS or Positive Behavioral Interventions Support is a school wide practice conducted to target a specific behavior(s) and improve the behavioral by-product. At Higher Ground Academy I have ascertained to see what type of PBIS is applied throughout the school. As a result of this research study, I’ve concluded two outcomes. First, PBIS Is implemented but through a different name and labeled as simply, citizenship. Second, teachers import intervention instructions, assistance and materials via the resource room, formerly known as special ed classroom.…

People have been studying the development of children for centuries. Their research has helped future generations understand how students learn, behave and their characteristics. There have been many theorists, but four of the most well known are Lev Vygotsky, Jean Piaget, Sigmund Freud, and Erik Erikson. Each one of these theorists has informed practice and the understanding of young children 's characteristics and needs. The understanding of each theorist “helps us to look at the facts from different perspectives” ().…

Each year students enter my room with little to no experience in a large group settings. For this reason, I am always thinking about the appropriate learning development for each of my students and build lessons for each of their needs. Although I teach preschool currently I believe that no matter the grade level a teacher teaches they must always think about the appropriate developmental teaching practices that need to be embedded in their classroom (OES 1). Part of implementing developmentally appropriate teaching practices into my classroom is first understanding how my students learn and develop (OES 1.1). Research has shown that young children learn best through play situations.…

I would like to extend my sincerest thanks for taking your time to consider my candidacy for the Educational Psychology/School Psychology program at the University of Wisconsin. I have always been drawn to behavioral psychology, the phenomenon of learning, and educational processes. After discovering that I had a special talent for working with children and at-risk youth, I eagerly began my academic pursuit in elementary education. With ever-increasing learning demands, and limited time and resources, I quickly learned that inevitably some children fail to perform adequately among their peers. This reality came quite clear to me through my experience working and substitute teaching in a public elementary school.…
