Developmental Stage and Life Transaction: Yamile is going through multiple transitions in her the life specifically with her recent separation from her husband, her impending status of becoming a grandmother, separation from her family, maturing into middle adulthood, and moving to another country to better provide for her family. The capacity to manage these multiple stressors is overwhelming for Yamile and contributing to her feelings of vulnerability amid all the transitions. Client Strengths and Strategies for Enduring: Yamile has strong parental aspirations towards her children who give her comfort. She has the capacity to make and keep friends since moving to Texas though language barriers could prove to be an issue in the future.

Features of Cuban culture such as strong parental control, the importance of non-nuclear relationships outside of the family, a high priority for collectivism and an investment for education in children are significant in Yamile’s life (Fong, 2004). She is struggling with values of individualism and deference from her daughter as well. Yamile’s Catholic faith and her cultural upbringing in Cuban attribute to the need to have her family involved with a larger community. Use of Employment: Though no knowledge is known about Yamile’s prior work history in Cuba, Yamile has stayed at home the past few years to take care of her young son. Presently Yamile is unemployed but she is seeking assistance from RST’s Employment program where she is currently completing their job readiness workshop. She recently acquired her work permit in the last two weeks and is hoping to procure a job with Employment’s help soon. Cultural and Community Resources: Yamile has sought out assistance from a local Catholic church where they help to connect refugees to other social services. Feelings of helplessness, grief and anxiety seem to contribute to these problems, suggesting that she may be suffering from depression though she has not been formally assessed or diagnosed. It seems that the onset of these feelings have coincided with her separation from her husband and her learning of her teenage daughter’s pregnancy. Add She becomes easily overwhelmed, talks with little expression and often lacks energy making it hard to care for her children. After meeting with Yamile over the course of two separate sessions however, it is seems that she possesses many positive behaviors that should be particularly helpful in her treatment. She is successful at seeking out resources such as Refugee Services, Breckenridge Hospital and Refugee Health Clinic; she is introspective and feels concern over her current emotional state; and she has some insights into the origins of her problems with her husband, children, and relocation to U.S. She appears to be highly motivated to change. Though she seems to suffer from a steady degree of depressive symptoms, she remains to be successful at gaining access to a work permit and school enrollment for her children. She longs for emotional stability in her life and wants to strengthen her relationship
