Newborns cerebral cortex is the outer folded mantle of the brain responsible for thinking, reasoning and all conscious responses. The infant cortex is what differentiates a human from any other species on earth. The brain quadruples in volume during the first four years of life. A newborn is born with rooting, sucking and grasping reflexes. Their sucking reflex is important because as soon as a newborn is born they are able to drink their breast milk or formula from a baby bottle. Safety measurements for a parent are to not shake your baby because they have a very weak neck. The shaking can also cause severe brain damage their brain and may lead to death. At the age of eight months, children begin to have a realistic understanding of the world. They understand the concept of concrete objects.
