The developmental continuum refers to a cycle of professional development going from D1 to D4, representing development levels related to competence and commitment of followers. An individual can move back and forth along the developmental continuum (Northouse, 2015). When a D4 follower who has done a great job and is ready to take more responsibilities gets promoted, he ends up D4 and goes back to D1 again because he will have new goals. The cycle starts over. Anyone who has gone through adolescence with their own children understands that this is, indeed, a unique period of developmental growth. This period of time is characterized by vast developmental changes where there is no time of faster growth, except for birth to 3 years.
