Joining the Football Team Between kindergarten and sixth grade I attended Our Lady of Fatima for my schooling. During this time, I made many friends, played basketball, and felt comfortable around the teachers and my fellow students. This changed during the summer between my sixth and seventh grade years. My family had recently moved to a new township and decided that they could no longer afford to send me to private school. It was decided that I would transfer to the local junior high school to start my seventh grade year. There are several positions on a football team; all with different jobs but they all must work together to accomplish a common goal. Furthermore, developing and understanding strategy is vitally important to success on the field. More so, once the ball is snapped, the situation can change in an instant, so mental flexibility was necessary as well. Lastly, the techniques taught to us, running, catching, blocking, and tackling could be applied in several situations and were utilized outside of just the context they were taught. Furthermore, there is evidence that playing team sports help improve both cognitive development and conflict resolution skills. Players are required to cooperate as a team, and in most team settings there will be disagreements. These situations provide youths and adolescents the chance to learn healthy conflict resolution between both their fellow peers and their adult coaches (Maximizing the benefits of youth sports, 2013). Joining the junior high football team made my transition from the familiar to the unfamiliar that much easier. I made new friends, gained a sense of self, and learned the importance of strategy, planning, and conflict resolution. I believe the most important thing I gained from playing football was a sense of dedication. I learned not to quit when something was difficult or unpleasant and I have utilized this character trait throughout high school and
