This essay will explore areas which support children in their development as readers and discuss how spoken language and different approaches, in the teaching of reading can develop and enrich children’s language comprehension skills. Reading comprehension is a process that can be developed through spoken language and different approaches to teaching reading. It means that a person understands what they are reading. Reading comprehension occurs throughout the reading process whilst a person reads a particular piece of text.
There are many different reasons that people read but understanding what is being read is always an important aspect (Charles, J, Charles, L. 2008.) Without comprehension, the idea of reading is just segmenting and blending

Illustrations in the text help children understand more about the situation that is being described and explained throughout the story by adding meaning and complimenting the words. (Medwell, J. Et Al. 2007) In Something Else every page is composed of a large illustration with lots of extra details included in them that are not discussed in the text. Children will have to take time looking over all the pictures which means they will become more immersed in the story and better understand the finer concepts that are included within the text. Medwell, J. Et Al. 2007 explains that the best books for children have characters that are so well described that the children feel a connection to them, some even feel like they relate to the character. Medwell, J. Et Al. 2007 goes on to say that children are far more likely to be interested in a book that they can relate to. There are various ways that a child could relate to the characters featured in Something Else. The story follows a creature that is different to the others and is therefore outcast from the other animals.
