Development of free states vs. slave states The Civil War was caused by a long and deep seeded conflict between the North and the South. Each region was built on completely different social, political, and economic standards. The South which were considered the Slave States were a slave owning community that followed a strict class based system consisting of the rich, the middle class, and slaves. They depended heavily upon slavery as a way of life. The North, which were considered the Free States was a more industrialized society where most of the community worked in factories. They did not follow a strict class system and had no need for slave labor. The North strongly opposed any use of slavery. This inflamed the South because it threatened their livelihood and their way of life. This conflict of views lead to a competition between the regions for more land. Each wanted to expand to the west. Unrest and tensions grew stronger between the two sides which inevitably resulted in the Civil War.

He claimed he should be free because he was enslaved while living in the free state of Illinois and the Wisconsin Territory. The Court ruled that his request for freedom could not be granted because he did not possess any property. It went even further, stating that even though he was living in a free state he was still considered a slave and that he was black and had "no rights which the white man was bound". The decision enraged the Northern public opinion which lead to a strong antislavery view.
