Higher education facilities are highly focused on cramming information into the minds of their students. Giving the students the ability to then teach the subject. Essentially creating an expert in a certain subject. While expertise is extremely important there are many other skills essential for higher education. Communication skills are immensely important for any person searching for success in their career. Social skills are skills essential for living in the current society. Georgia Yu in her essay “Social Skills” underlines the importance of social skills in all facets of life. Organization skills are important for daily living. Diane Albright in her essay “The Advantage of Being Organized” proves the importance of organization for employees. Teamwork skills are important for working effectively. Research skills are made of the ability to use resources to gather information and critical thinking. Research skills will be needed to keep up to date with this ever evolving world. Student’s research style is dependent on their education “How students learn to conduct research is dependent on a number of variables including previous (high school) experience, the extent of classroom information literacy integration by librarians on campus, and the personal preferences of classroom faculty”.(Stewart-Mailhiot 35) It is of the utmost importance for schools to teach proper research skills. Many colleges fail to teach proper research skills releasing unqualified students into the world. T. Subahan Mohd Meerah, et al, in their study find “that the graduates in general have moderate knowledge and competencies to conduct research… further enhancement of the research training is needed in order to produce very knowledgeable and skillful researcher in the student 's field of specialization” without a change in research training methods more unqualified students will be produced.(626) Research skills are sought after by employers because they imply adaptability. An employee with strong research skills will never need replacement. Research skills are needed for a lifetime and should be one of higher education’s main goals.
