Developing Professionalism: A Career In Pharmacy

As a learner I believe that I will develop professionalism throughout my class, IPPES, APPEs, pharmacy organizations, and work at CVS. I will develop professionalism in my classes by learning about the profession in general, how to make an ethically sound decision, and completing community service. I will learn about the profession in general through Dean Spooner’s Introduction to Pharmacy class. In the class we have learned about the changes in pharmacy and how these have impacted the profession as a whole. We are also getting to know about all of the different pharmacy pathways we can take and what to expect if we go down these pathways. This allows us to get a realistic sense about what the profession is like in the field and not just what it is preserved to be in an academic sense. I am currently developing the skills to make an ethically sound decision in Doctor Baker’s Ethics class. This will allow me to become an independent thinker in respects to making my own ethical decision instead of relying on somebody else to help me. As a health professional learner I am in the mind set of learning by people who have higher authority over me. This means that I tend to learn by example. Some traits that professors and hopefully preceptors will show will allow me to create professional traits that are helpful in developing professionalism. Professors tend to show us traits that are similar to commitment and organization. These are important traits to have as a professional because they are needed in order to create a successful business or practice. In the future I hope that my preceptor will teach me traits that emphases patient care and a professional respect. Both of these skills will help me develop professionalism that is respectable for the pharmacy
