Developing My Writing Skills

Decent Essays
When acquiring new skills, I usually think to myself, “How is this skill going to come in handy when I enter the working world?” If I cannot think of any purpose for knowing the skill, then I tend to forget about it. For example, I do not see any using for knitting except to pass the time and I do not plan on taking a class about how to knit anytime soon. One thing I do think is important to learn and always improve on would be my writing skills. I figure no matter where my career takes me whether it be on stage, backstage, or even being a stay at home mom I will always be writing. Even if I’m not writing papers for classes or writing my own play I do need to know the basic skills to write a simple email or letter to a coworker or family member.

Having to apply what I learned from each essay has really helped me a lot. By learning to use MLA style to have a better look throughout my essays, and fixing unnecessary semicolon and using commas when needed to avoid run on sentences or fragments, as well as eliminating to-be verbs for shorter more detailed sentence, and how to use work or words that aren't mine correctly to avoid plagiarism. From learning all those things, it has totally changed my way of writing because the way I used to go about my written, is not even close to how ENGL 101 changed me to being a better writer than I was before.…

In regards to my writing process, there have been some central strategies that I have developed over time and some strategies that I have had for as long as I can remember. For example, one skill that I have developed from high school has been to annotate, mark up, and take notes throughout my readings. I found that taking notes really helps me, not only to remember what I read but to go back and be able to point out something in my reading easily. In addition, it helped me understand the readings better.…

Writing is an art; we create our thoughts in your mind and express it on paper. Once we start writing we keep getting new ideas and when we re-read what we wrote, sometimes it might surprise us. I like to write during early mornings or in the evening when it is quiet. My reading table is facing towards the window so when fresh air is in my room, fresh ideas generate inside me as well. I make sure to have some healthy snacks and a bottle of water in front me…

For eighteen years, I have roamed this earth, and for thirteen of those years I have been able to harness my craft in writing. As I look back on those times, I see how much I have improved. I learned that I despised word count essays and loved creative writing assignments. My literacy journey began in kindergarten where they taught us how to write out the alphabet, my name, and simple sentences. I don’t remember everything that about my time in kindergarten, but I do remember how frustrated I was trying to write out my name.…
