This book goes into the subject in much greater detail and aims to offer researchers hands-on guidance in the preparation of their research proposals. It is based on the same principles as the earlier book – that quantitative and qualitative methods are both required in social research, that training for research should develop an understanding of both, and that the two approaches can usefully be treated together in terms of the logic of empirical inquiry. On this basis, the book deals with the development of research proposals for quantitative, qualitative and mixed method empirical research. As before, I want to thank the research students and researchers I have worked with over the years. In a very real sense, this book brings together what I have learned from working with them.
