Role play support children with their literacy skills as they are using words in order to speak but also write words down on paper which supports them to learn how to speak and write. For example, role playing a shop will help children explore the situation, “extend their language, learn on how to cooperate, develop their skills and gain confidence” CACHE Level 3 childcare and education 4th edition- Penny Tassoni. Acting as if the children are in a shop or act as a customer in the shop support their language but as well as their cooperation skills as they have to use words in order to communicate with each other. Children can also write their own shopping list as it is will support them in to writing. It is the role of the practitioner to model, encourage and support children to speak, read and write. In my previous experience, I have seen that practitioners have supported children to write by helping them and showing them how to hold a pen and showing them how to draw a line or even how to write their name. The EYFS tells practitioners what resources are right for the correct age range of children. There should be displays and letters around the setting as it catches the attention of the child and may be going to read and as well as learn. Labelling children’s work in lower case letters is important as children may be able to read their own name but as well as learning how to write their name. Writing children’s names in big capital letters Is not going to help them to write and is difficult to read for them. Pens, pencils should be sharpened to children know how they need to use it and not hurting them because not having these pens and pencils sharpened will not help them learn on how to use it as they would not make a mark while they are writing. Having books and computers in the setting is essential to have as it helps children understand how a computer works. Labelling resources with the objects name is crucial as it helps children’s literacy to read and know the items name which increases their vocabulary. Having wow books/profile books is helpful for children as it shows the parents of the child to see what their child is able to do. Changing the prints in the room is good for children because children will be able to learn different words
