Developing a professional identity is essential to a counselor in training. This process enables future counselors to solidify ideas regarding their role, function and relationships with clients, professionals and the larger society. Within the Survey of Research in Human Development for Professional Counselors course, I have been provided information to assist in forming ideas related to my professional identity. These concepts include identifying the difference between counseling specializations, mental health counseling philosophies as well as licensure and certification requirements as it relates to a coursework plan. The course also allowed reflection on how professional associations can assist with developing one’s professional identity
