Developing a Personal Learning Philosophy
Children need qualify educators whose passion for their profession help them to reach the maximum potential. Educators are individuals who decided to make of teaching their vocation for life and are influencing the young student’s generations to become the professionals and leaders of tomorrow. Early childhood teachers are committed to impart a fine education. It is imperative for early childhood teachers to develop a personal philosophy that embrace the developmental theories, the meaning and role as professionals and advocates, the importance of include all children in the teaching practices, as well as the influence of the technology and environment in the education of the young minds. A personal philosophy needs to be based on developmental theories supporting the best teaching practice for children. Two of the most influencing ones are the nature and nurture theories. Nature highlighting heredity, was endorse by Plato, Hippocrates, Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, John Dewey, Maria Montessori, Charles Darwin, and Wolfgang Kohler between others. Nurture endorsing the environment was followed by theorists such as John Locke, Friedrich Froebel, Lev Vygotsky, Jean Piaget, B. Skinner, Erick Erikson, and Loris Malaguzzi, just to mention some examples (Dever & Falconer, 2008 pp 4-15).
