I will be reflecting on developing a breastfeeding plan with an interprofessional (IP) team for a mother addicted to methamphetamine. The IP team comprised of the pediatrician, nurses and I. I will be applying research-based articles to support the quality of IP care provided to the mother and newborn. I will provide examples of how, “IP knowledge is a core aspect of nursing knowledge” (Sommerfeldt, 2013). I will also be incorporating the six domains of the Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative (CIHC) National Interprofessional Competency Framework integrated with my IP experience.
A mother approached me while I was in the nursery with her newborn and asked me when she could begin breastfeeding. From morning report I learned the mother abused methamphetamine throughout her pregnancy and recently started the methadone program and denied any further methamphetamine use while in the hospital. The mother’s newborn was showing symptoms of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) and was being weaned off opiates with morphine and was to be apprehended and placed in the care of the maternal grandmother once discharged. I explained to the mother I would need to speak with the other health care professionals (HCPs) first and then we could develop a feeding plan together. The mother was receptive to the idea of creating a feeding plan together.
