The Shoe Drive January 12, 2010. The day the devastating large-scale earthquake demolished Haiti. Growing up in Los Angeles and being born at the turn of the century, I never saw the amount of destruction the Earth could cause. Of course, as we get older it becomes more difficult to escape reality, but when you’re younger it’s easier to tune it all out. The earthquake in Haiti ignited a fire in me that would never burn out. For a few weeks post-earthquake, an immense feeling of guilt continuously washed over me like waves over the sand. Guilt for not doing anything, guilt for not helping, guilt for having so much while others now had nothing. “What can I do? What can I give?” These thoughts rushed through my mind constantly.
