Detrimental To Parents

Having children can be both rewarding and detrimental to parents in many ways. When your child is born there is an instant connection and somehow as a parent you know you are now that person’s nurturer and caregiver. A sense of responsibility and maturity develop because you know that you must feed, clothe, and protect this person for as long as necessary. This new presence in your life gives you a new found purpose and great satisfaction. From the beginning of time, people have wanted to pass on their heritage or legacy for their family. This is why I am currently a working, full time student, wife, and mother. I was not able to go to school right after high school because I chose marriage and children. Now at age thirty-seven, I am working hard toward a career that will better support my family financially. Most companies are not very forgiving to families. Daycare and schools will call you if your child has a fever or a virus and instruct you that they need to be picked up immediately. In most places of work this would be frowned upon and only tolerated a limited amount of times. If your family support system is small this may be a struggle for you. Although having a child with genetic disabilities is small, many people choose to not have children or terminate pregnancies due to this reason. You would not easily be available to work or have a career with a disabled child because they require full time care and options for childcare in these circumstances are very limited.
