In the instance of Jeffrey Dahmer, his family was indeed aware of his troubled tendencies and awkward social life. Jeffrey Dahmer’s father was aware of his son’s social withdraw and uncommunicative transformation; consequently, fueled by heavy alcohol consumption. Mr. Dahmer forced a decision many parents make with enlisting in the Armed Forces; however, this attempt to bring stability was thwarted with Jeffrey’s dishonorable discharge due to alcoholism (Crime-Museum, 2016). No family member cares to assume or admit that it has a member with mental issues or may cause harm to another member of society; however, the reality is every criminal, mass murderer, and spree murderer has or had a family. Jeffrey Dahmer was kicked out of the Army for misconduct and alcoholism, convicted of fondling a young boy before his serial murder spree transpired and he was even kicked out of his grandmother’s house for possessing a firearm and dissecting and dissolving squirrels with chemicals (Crime-Museum, 2016). This should have raised many red flags and the authorities should have been contacted immediately. Unlike the atrocities of killing in the name of war, serial murderer Jeffrey Dahmer had no political agenda and did not align himself to any prejudice. He was a psychopath that killed for the pleasure of it and the power it consumed him with. It is unlikely that the fear of going to prison had any bearing on his actions as he was not a rational person; furthermore, a tactic such as a visit to the state prison as an adolescent would not have swayed his actions. The signs of torment were visible in him during his late teenage years; unfortunately, there was not an adequate intervention from his family or the authorities. Perhaps the data collected from his case study will enable FBI profilers and other families that have children who display similar traits to intervene sooner and prevent another serial murderer from making his or her first killing a reality. Researchers continue to seek out a biological trait or a signal that can identify the cause that allows a person to act on such horrific acts of violence. It is imperative that families seek help and advice if they believe a child display any of the tendencies these serial murderers have in common. If a child is cruel to animals or other children and causes violence with little remorse, professional assistance is available from the state.
