Serial criminals are often psychologically numb to the unimaginable pain they caused his or her victims and families. In Fact, they are often depicted in court rooms looking stoic or zombie like and no emotion is drawn from facial expressions. In the instance of Jeffrey Dahmer, his family was indeed aware of his troubled tendencies and awkward social life. Jeffrey Dahmer’s father was aware of his son’s social withdraw and uncommunicative transformation; consequently, fueled by heavy alcohol consumption. Mr. Dahmer forced a decision many parents make with enlisting in the Armed Forces; however, this attempt to bring stability was thwarted with Jeffrey’s dishonorable discharge due to alcoholism (Crime-Museum, 2016). No family member cares to assume or admit that it has a member with mental issues or may cause harm to another member of society; however, the reality is every criminal, mass murderer, and spree murderer has or had a family. Jeffrey Dahmer was kicked out of the Army for misconduct and alcoholism, convicted of fondling a young boy before his serial murder spree transpired and he was even kicked out of his grandmother’s house for possessing a firearm and dissecting and dissolving squirrels with chemicals (Crime-Museum, 2016). This should have raised many red flags and the authorities should have been contacted immediately. The mental health of Jeffrey Dahmer was clearly in question and the state should have an opportunity to admit him to a psychiatric facility for …show more content…
Unlike the atrocities of killing in the name of war, serial murderer Jeffrey Dahmer had no political agenda and did not align himself to any prejudice. He was a psychopath that killed for the pleasure of it and the power it consumed him with. It is unlikely that the fear of going to prison had any bearing on his actions as he was not a rational person; furthermore, a tactic such as a visit to the state prison as an adolescent would not have swayed his actions. The signs of torment were visible in him during his late teenage years; unfortunately, there was not an adequate intervention from his family or the authorities. Perhaps the data collected from his case study will enable FBI profilers and other families that have children who display similar traits to intervene sooner and prevent another serial murderer from making his or her first killing a reality. Researchers continue to seek out a biological trait or a signal that can identify the cause that allows a person to act on such horrific acts of violence. It is imperative that families seek help and advice if they believe a child display any of the tendencies these serial murderers have in common. If a child is cruel to animals or other children and causes violence with little remorse, professional assistance is available from the state. Perhaps Jeffrey Dahmer would have made a different choice than to kill if his

A lot of people want to blame the parents of the offenders, asking “what did you turn your child into?” 36% of serial killers were physically abused, 26% were sexually abused, and 50% were psychologically abused (Mitchell and Aamodt 45). Many people have logically come to the conclusion that just because someone is abused, it does not mean that they will become a serial killer; or even a murderer; which is true. In the general population (people who have never committed murder) only 6% are physically abused, 3% are sexually abused, and 2% are psychologically abused (Mitchell and Aamodt 45). The dramatic difference of abuse frequency between people who are serial killers and people who are not seems evident enough to support that serial killers are created.…

Deborah Schurman-Kauflin, a psychologist, researched routines that serial killers would usually follow before every crime. Most serial killers know how to be one step above law enforcement, and are very strategic throughout the whole process. They know how to properly clean up the mess they make without leaving noticeable DNA behind (Schurman-Kauflin, 2013). According to Schurman-Kauflin (2013), “Taking extraordinary measures and being patient has helped many killers get away with their crimes” (Schurman-Kauflin, 2013, para.…

Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer, more infamously known as the “Milwaukee Cannibal”, is considered one of the America’s most notorious lust serial killers. Dahmer spent over a decade terrorizing the city of Milwaukee with his horrendous killings. Because of the torturous manner in which he committed his murders, Dahmer landed himself a spot at the highest level on Dr. Michael Stone’s Gradations of Evil Scale ("On The Scale of Evil, Where do Murderers Rate?", n.d.). He not only murdered 17 men, but also engaged in necrophilia, cannibalism, and zombieism after drugging, molesting, and strangling the men to death (“Jeffrey Dahmer Biography”, n.d.). Though the crux of his killings occurred during the 1980s, Dahmer claims that his urges to kill and fantasies…

So looking into to the fringes of society, where many fear to go, inside the minds of four vicious murders, to find an answer to the previous question, what causes serial killers to become what they are: Nature or nurture? The first killer that I will consider is Jeffery Dahmer. Jeffery was the first child of Lionel and Joyce Dahmer.…

Strain theory illustrates that Dahmer’s crimes could have come about because of a supposed consistency between materialistic goals and values he had with what was available to him by society, family or anything else that got in his way of accomplishing his deeds. The general theories of crime say that offenders are not disciplined and that their ties to social order are fragile and have a deficiency of self-control. Some individuals have urges that they feel they do not have control over and what makes them do certain kinds of crimes. Dahmer was like this.…
