STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

It is my firm belief that the deepest desires are emblazoned unconsciously at childhood. I

grew up watching my father work as an Oil Technologist in an edible oil refinery. He would

regularly take me along with him to the refinery to explain the processes involved. My

curiosity was kindled when I saw how cotton seeds which were fed into machines at one end

of the industry were miraculously turned into edible oil at the other. The size and sound of

huge machinery left me wondering what exactly was happening inside those pieces of

equipment which converted raw materials into finished goods. This was the time I was

introduced to the fascinating field of Chemical Engineering and the idea of pursuing the road

I am especially interested in

Momentum Transfer, Chemical Reaction Engineering and Transfer Operations. I have

performed well in six semesters and I consistently rank in top ten percent of the class with a

CGPA of 9.02 out of 10 Point scale.

In my second year of Engineering, I participated in an industrial problem solving event titled

Delta-T sponsored by Tata Steel Ltd. I consider this as my first step into field of chemical

engineering. I developed a Spiral Shell and Tube heat exchanger to achieve higher heat

transfer rates. Even though I could not make it to the top three, the competition served me a

good learning experience and exposed me to the practical problems faced in the industry. In

my third year, I participated in Shell Ideas 360, a global competition conducted by Shell

Petroleum. I was a member of a three member team which designed a smart tap. Our work

was appreciated for its simplicity and portability. I was responsible for design and analysis of

the Smart Tap using Creo Parametric, a design software.

Realising the need for a dedicated technical student association to encourage new and

innovative chemical engineering ideas, I took the initiative to form this Technical Team. In

its very first year, the team has been endowed with the coveted responsibility of suggesting

ideas to the Municipal Corporation of my city in realising our Prime Minister’s vision of

transforming the city into a smart city. Furthermore, I am an active member of TAKE A

LEAP, Environmental activists ' club of NIT Trichy. I played a pivotal role in Green

Plantation Drive, Campus Clean up Drive, Go Green Campaign and various other initiatives

by this club. To reduce paper wastage and reuse the printed sheets, we found a viable Eco-

friendly solution by introducing the Spiral bound notebooks which became extremely popular

with the student community.

I have taken up three online courses offered by Coursera and edX on Nuclear Science and

Technology, Thermodynamics and Energy 101. They have left me greatly impressed with the

foreign education system and reiterated my belief that the Netherlands is a leading

As a chemical engineer for a large chemical manufacturer I developed an excel tool that analyzed sales trends for our products and compared the sales history to trends in customer requests for those products. This tool identified markets and applications where customers were asking for information about products but they were not placing orders. I hypothesized that by analyzing these gaps we could discover when our customers were evaluating our product for a potential new application. This would trigger my employer to form a research partnership enabling the development of new technologies while also increasing sales. My supervisor recognized me with a distinguished employee award for the development of this tool.…

For example, when I mentored and tutored 5th graders, I had to not only be the authority figure, but I was responsible for listening to their problems and concerns and providing them with the best resolution. Being a mediator allows me to be a silent leader for the reason that I can lead people while they feel like they are a leader as well.…
