Determining The Relationship Between Validity And Reliaability

Decent Essays
Dr. L, Finding the right instrument to measure the variables being studied is very important. In fact, the instruments determine the quality of the research. There are two parameters used to assess the quality of an instrument and they are reliability and validity. Reliability is the ability of the instrument to measure a variable and obtain consistent and stable results when applied to similar conditions. The predictability and accuracy of an instrument strengthens its reliability (Tamilselvi & Ramamurthy, 2013). If an I.Q. Test consistently predicts the students academic performance in school, then one could conclude that the instrument is reliable in testing a students intellectual abilities. Validity is the appropriateness, meaningfulness, completeness, and utility of the instrument in measuring the variables being studied (Tamilselvi & Ramamurthy, 2013). For example, if one is trying to assess a patients knowledge on hypertension by using an instrument that asks questions about managing blood sugar, then the test would be considered an invalid instrument because the questions are not addressing the phenomenon of interest. Then, the validity of the results will be in question.

Hi Abass, Thank you for your post. I agree with you in regards to what you wrote that “If the instrument do not adequately measure the concepts or lack the validity and reliability, the study may be invalid.” I was reading a few examples and I came across one that explains reliability and validity goes hand in hand. The example that stood out for me was a customer named Joe who goes to the ice cream shop every day after work at 5pm. By 5:05pm, he gets his milkshake and he swears by it that it’s the best milkshake he ever tasted.…

Determining the strength of a nursing research study is a critical process that enhances the implementation of evidence-based practice. Determining the strength of a nursing research study ensures that the empirical knowledge developed through nursing research is useful in improving nursing care, the system of healthcare delivery, and patient outcomes. Additionally, nurses should use research findings when making clinical decisions on the best practice to use in order to deliver healthcare services that ensure all the patients receive safe and quality care (Melnyk et al. 2014). Therefore, determining the strength of a nursing research study helps to ensure the evidence is credible (valid and reliable) and is appropriate if incorporated into clinical practice.…

Everyone taking the test should have similar test-taking conditions. The test must be perceptive or significant enough so that averages can be calculated; it must produce a score to summarize the test taker's performance. The researcher would have to demonstrate that the test is reliable. To prove reliability, the results be able to be recreated by taking the test again. The test must measure what it is supposed to measure.…

The second ranking tool used to analyze Gantz et al., 2015 article is the USPSTF, Grade B- recommended for service. In assessing the study, it was determined that “the levels of bullying other nurses were low or moderate and level of prevention was weak or moderate. The result of this study suggest that the higher the level of bullying, the lower the level of prevention” (Gantz et al., 2015, p. 509). According to the USPSTFS the obtain benefit is of moderate certainty. The UPSTFS level of certainty for moderate suggests that the existing evidence is adequate to determine the effects of the preventive service on health outcomes.…

Moving on from the different research methodologies used in health and social care, I will now assess those research methodologies and come to a conclusion as to how valid the findings which are obtained through these methods are, and what could be done to improve the validity and reliability of data gained from such research methodologies. Some methods of research may give better and more reliable data than other methods. Each method comes with its advantages and disadvantages and some are more suitable for use in certain situations than others. Validity is about how accurate the results of a research are and whether the research piece has the ability to test and research the things it set out to achieve. Reliability is about how trustworthy…
