Stephen Sondheim once quoted in one of his most famous plays, Into the Woods, “If you know what you want, then you go and you find it and you go and get it.” This is a quote that many people live by and represent in their daily lives. Three people that really stood out to as living determined lives are; Thomas Edison, Carrie Underwood, and my mom. All of these people had a goal that they were willing to work and make sacrifices for.

Thomas Edison was not a man that gave up easily. Once he knew what he wanted, Edison made sure he worked to accomplish it. He didn’t care how long it was going to take him, he was going to create a long-lasting light bulb. “It took Edison more than a year to find

Even as a young child, singing was her passion. “She started singing at a young age, initially at church and later in school and talent shows” (Michael). Underwood practiced her skill and showed her love of singing by performing in public events. The dream she had was put on hold as she went to college for a short period of time. “In 2002 she entered Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, with intentions to pursue a career in broadcast journalism. Two years later she interrupted her studies to audition for American Idol” (Michael). Her dream of becoming a singer meant too much to her to just let them fall through. Her goal was to at least give them a shot, and to her, American Idol was the way to accomplish her dream. Most people would agree that she was right to pursue her dream. She went on to win the American Idol and have an extremely successful career and win many awards. “The following year, (2008) Underwood was inducted as a member of the Grand Ole Opry...She collected her fourth Grammy Award in February 2009, taking home the trophy for best female country vocal performance...Two months later Underwood was named entertainer of the year by the Academy of Country Music, becoming the seventh woman to win the award in its four-decade history. They are so persistent in their journey to freedom that they will attempt to leave Syria any way possible. “Four children, including a baby girl, were among 71 people found dead in the back of a truck on an Austrian motorway. Meanwhile, 82 bodies washed ashore after a boat packed with migrants sank off the coast of Libya, with about 100 people thought to be missing”(Sim). Boats and trucks are only some of the ways refugees are leaving Syria. Many Syrians are being threatened and don 't want their families to live in those unprosperous conditions so they are taking their whole families in search of more fulfilling lives. The increased number of refugees is also, unfortunately, leading to a more significant number of deaths and a lower success rate. “More than 2,500 people have died making the crossing this year. That compares with 3,500 who died or went missing in the Mediterranean in 2014. ‘The way people are being packed onto boats is causing their deaths,’ UNHCR spokeswoman Melissa Fleming told a UN briefing”(Sim). These Syrians are all so motivated to get their freedom that they are risking everything, including their lives. The trials that the refugees are facing help us not only be thankful for our less significant stresses, but to also

They face incredible oppression in their native countries, under the rule of terrorists such as ISIS, as well as the murderous dictator Bashar al-Assad.
