There is no fail-safe way to determine if a subject is lying, however it has been established that there are nonverbal actions that are related with a suspect’s dishonesty (Virij, 2008). Additionally, behaviors will differ across deceptive situations; as a result it is imperative the interviewer notes down changes in behaviors in response to the questions.
According to Hoffman (2005), there are a series of verbal and non-verbal behaviors that may indicate dishonesty, examples for non-verbal behaviors include (1) sagging over or slanting back in the chair, or a constant shift in position in the chair; (2) placing the hand over the mouth to muffle words or hide expressions, arms crossed with the thumbs extended; (3) constant movement of legs and feet; (4) having his or her head down can indicate a negative attitude or submission, head nodding or head shaking (Hoffman, 2005, p. …show more content…
