Destructive Relationships

The short story “Cat In The Rain” written by Ernest Hemingway reveals the destructive relationship between an American couple. The American woman is neglected by her husband, George, and because of this she begins to feel attracted to the Padrone she meets in a hotel. The story reveals the needs of the American “girl” and show what she truly desires. In “The Yellow Wall-Paper” written by Charlotte Perkons Stetson, the story in summary is about how the main girl character whose husband, John, neglects her in their relationship. He takes initiative in both sides of the relationship and makes decisions for her. John is a dominant figure who neglects his wife and does not allow her to have a say. In both of the stories, the relationship between the characters are revealed. The male is this dominant figure who neglects his wife and tries to make the women feel vulnerable. This leading to a destructive relationship to form between the couples. However both of the women are able to overcome that destructive relationship and the formation of a new relationship reveals their true desires. The padrone and the woman in the wall are two key characters that shows the aspirations of both the woman figures. Even though the destructive nature of the relationship between husband and wife are revealed, ultimately, the woman are able to portray what they truly want. These women were able to break free from their old relationships and expose the destructive nature of the relationship. The new relationships that they form opened the eyes of the women to begin to take small steps into becoming authoritative figures of their own life.
