Despicable Me Hero

In Despicable Me, the main protagonist is Gru although he doesn't conform to the stereotypical hero. When we are first introduced to Gru, he is drawn as a menacing, dark man who in most movies would fall under the villainous category and usually is captured on a low angle to make the audience feel intimidated by him and the has a monotonous, dark theme song which triggers audience members' subconscious. He has a foreign accent and is drawn with a tall physique, large nose, bushy eyebrows and no neck or hair. One of his first actions in the film is blowing up a balloon and giving it to a little kid who is crying only to pop it immediately afterwards and smile. This not only indicates that he is evil, but also shows that he enjoys it. It is …show more content…
This is achieved through how Vector is drawn, his actions and his life choices. For example, he wears an orange 'warmup suit' which is quite nerdy and geeky, which are usually characteristics of wannabe characters. Vector is drawn as a skinny, short teenager with a high pitched voice and an adolescent figure. This indicates that he is not very experienced and is not on the villainous level that Gru is. Vector also possesses some quite unusual 'weapons' like his squid launcher which isn't very effective. Vector makes a fool of himself around other people and sucks up to Gru quite a lot, obviously trying to impress him. It isn't until later in the film that Vector displays some of his more evil characteristics, although he does keep his geeky attitude throughout the film. For example, when Gru gives him the moon in exchange for the girls, Vector keeps both the girls and the moon and plays the stereotypical role that most villains play in the climax. At the end of the film, Vector gets what he deserves and is stuck on the moon out in space. This is usually what happens at the end of books or movies to villains, further indicating that Vector is not a

After the publication of “Into the Wild,” by Jon Krakauer, a book about a young man named Christopher McCandless, a great mass of people came forward and criticized McCandless (include more) Included in this group is Peter Christian, an Alaska Park Ranger that believed Chris as an “stupid, tragic, and inconsiderate,” man that essentially had a death wish. However, what may be interpreted as a foolish act by some was actually McCandless’ way of pursuing his dreams. In fact, McCandless shares the similarities of a hero because he was brave enough to leave everything and follow through with his dreams. Deerslayer is a valiant character who feels the need to protect and save others. He is always aware of his surroundings, and that leads to him being able to get out of many tricky situations. He has some very problematic views of the world, but that is to be expected from that time frame, but it still made it hard to picture deerslayer as the hero, but nonetheless he was the hero of this story. A knight of the wilderness is the only way to describe deerslayer because he is valiant, he observes his surroundings like a warrior, and he would rather be in the wilderness as opposed to a settlement. Deerslayer is a very brave character, and the hero of this story.…

The villain in many works of literature can be as complex as the hero himself; however, this villain that the hero has to fight is not necessarily the only villain that our hero has to worry about. Living inside the hero, the villain is as undeniable and as powerful as it is in the monstrous creatures that are to be fought in a more physical or present way. The true villain in many hero novels is the struggle within the hero himself. This villain is like any other; entering when least expected and being fed by outside sources. The fact remains: they are as deadly as the monsters that attack in the night.…

I believe that Harry Potter fulfills 9 out of 10 elements of the hero as presented by Otto Rank. Harry Potter's biological parents are James and Lily Potter so we can omit the assumption that his mother was a virgin with supernatural conception. In the last Harry Potter series, he was successful on defeating Lord Voldermort at the expense of his two father-figures, Albus Dumbledore and Severus Snape. A father or a father figure has big influence on his son. Lord Voldermort in a way can be described as his negative father figure because he influenced him as such that molded him to what he is now.…

Intriguing heroes are plenty, villains, not so many. However, the ‘Batman’ universe gave the world a menacing yet fascinating super villain with a chalk white face, green hair, and a fear inducing Glasgow smile. Unlike the many other fictional villains who petrified the world with super powers and super weapons, this man was able to instil gut wrenching fear by virtue of his “strange” personality. It is for this very reason that the “Joker” is such a captivating and interesting character to study. One way to understand the ‘what’ and ‘why’ of the Joker’s personality is through the Psychoanalytic approach.…
