He states that “the first thing to do is admit your condition” (Elbow 145). When beginning to write a piece it is best to get all of the information out there and put pen to paper. He shares that it does not matter how these initial thoughts are organized or expressed, just that they are written. When compiling all of the information, it is far easier to be reminded of all the information that may have been otherwise forgotten. Elbow puts it simply when he says to “just write and keep writing” (Elbow 145). Peter explains a process of taking a series of cards, such as index cards, to organize the information of the piece. He describes the process of writing the ideas and information down on cards and going through them to make form piles of cards that share similar information, ideas, or thoughts. Peter compares this process with the cards to the game solitaire: “the rules of this particular game permit shuffling the unused pile” (Elbow 146). If the author’s style of writing is not appealing to the reader, the writing may persuade the audience to not trust and or discredit the author. Vonnegut says in “How to Write with Style” that “if you scribble your thoughts any which way, your readers will surely feel that you care nothing about them” (Vonnegut 137). Vonnegut goes on to describe eight helpful ways to improve or create an author’s writing style. His process includes finding a subject that the author is passionate about, keeping it simple, being honest with the contents of the piece, writing with intent, and elaborate to help the audience better understand the piece (Vonnegut137-140). According to Vonnegut, by taking his suggestions into account, a writer can develop his or her own style of writing to more effectively sharing with the readers a personal connection, an understand of the writer’s passion, and the author’s knowledge of the subject matter in his or her
