Desk Placement

Desk arrangement, praise, and feedback creating a positive classroom. Throughout the paper the main ideas will be tied back to the field placement I received. In company with the tie back to field placement this essay will discuss how having the correct desk arrangement can help optimize the desired behavior of the students. Along with desk arrangement, how praise and feedback can create a positive environment for student learning. According to Wannarka and Ruhl (2008), " Seating arrangements are important classroom setting events because they have the potential to help prevent problem behaviors that decrease student attention and diminish available instructional time." Some ways for feedback to be effective are make it positive, direct, precise and intentional(Conroy, Sutherland, Snyder, Al-Hendwi, Vo, A,2009 pg21) . The teacher did this by going over mistakes with the students. for example, when a student struggled with a homework assignment she would pull them aside and work through the problem with them. She would smile and ask questions so the student would fix their mistakes without feeling attacked. She would complement the students when the fixed their mistakes or when they looked at the mistake and realized their mistake without her asking any …show more content…
In the study that was done on facial expression used in the classroom most of the teacher stated that they would use happy and smiling when manage the class They also stated that when the class is acting up they will use grumpy or sour as classroom management. The data showed that most teachers would not use furious. the reason for this that the student would not respond correctly as most students find that facial expression objectionable.(Toprak, and Savas,2013 pg224-225). My field placement teacher used this a lot in her classroom. By using facial expression she did not have to call out the student in front of the class and embarrass them. Embarrassing them would create an atmosphere of fear rather than safe and open. She was also able to maintain the environment by using her facial expression. When she smiled the students asked more question and engaged more freely in the activity at hand. When her facial expression was more sour or grumpy the class did not participate as much. Students sat at their desks, as well as, they did not ask questions. Looking back on this it ties in well with the data presented by Toprak and
