“…Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” “Desiree’s Baby” by Kate Chopin, is about a young woman and man, who falls in love with each other and gets married. Armand and Desiree have a child, but its skin color is not white. Desiree does not know her ethnicity nor does Armand, so he accuses her of being black and ruining his family name. I will be exploring how pride, love and race has affected the marriage of Armand and Desiree.
All through this story, Armand is depicted as the man who had everything. He assumed that due to his family name which he thought was, “…one of the oldest and proudest in Louisiana” (). The way that Armand was a slave owner and originated from a family whose name was well-known he utilized his family name as another approach to feel like a ruler other than owning slaves. Armand's pride was before his family since he had a feeling that he needed to secure the family name and history at any means possible. For this he advised Desiree and their new born baby to leave since he accused her of being black. Armand did not need people to disapprove of him or make him look like a fool, so he felt like “…he no longer loved her, because of the unconscious injury she had brought upon his home and his name” (). Armand met Desiree when she was eighteen when he rode past her as “she stood one day against the stone pillar” (). Armand “fell in love, as if struck by a pistol shot” () which was the way that everyone in his family experience love. It was so sudden, and he scarcely knew she was the one and they had a child together. Desiree adored Armand and their new born baby more than Armand ever did because she knew he was a decent man and he changed for the better after he met her. I believe Desiree only had true love for her parents. Armand love for Desiree was never real, he only loved the power of his family

Desiree wrote a letter to her mother explaining that she cannot live and for the reason, she must die, however, there were other options that Desiree simply did not identify or consider such as trying to track her origins to prove that Armand was wrong, getting some professional help to help her with her new struggle, leaving that house and choosing to belief that Armand was wrong, or simply just moving to somewhere else and remarry. All these options were most likely available at the time and even though death might have ended her immediate suffering, it wouldn’t have given her the chance to be happy again. At the time, being black was considered as detrimental to a person, especially in the social life, since it was considered the “race cursed with the brand of slavery” (Chopin, 4) and therefore they were looked down upon as inferior.…

Since Armand was stressing out about what happened in that event, he broke his promise to stay by Desiree 's side no matter what happened, lost all his parental job because he judged way too early and didn 't analyze or didn 't ask for any help. Desiree, in the other hand, would have handled the situation way differently and very good to know considering the fact she seems to be the person in charge in that moment. She would have probably told Armand about the letter she had acquired and told him he was from a black ancestry. Kate Chopin showed also that in the Old South, the women were loved, cherished, and taken care of by the husband. The men in return got served by them and got good times out of their wife.…
