All through this story, Armand is depicted as the man who had everything. He assumed that due to his family name which he thought was, “…one of the oldest and proudest in Louisiana” (). The way that Armand was a slave owner and originated from a family whose name was well-known he utilized his family name as another approach to feel like a ruler other than owning slaves. Armand's pride was before his family since he had a feeling that he needed to secure the family name and history at any means possible. For this he advised Desiree and their new born baby to leave since he accused her of being black. Armand did not need people to disapprove of him or make him look like a fool, so he felt like “…he no longer loved her, because of the unconscious injury she had brought upon his home and his name” (). Armand met Desiree when she was eighteen when he rode past her as “she stood one day against the stone pillar” (). Armand “fell in love, as if struck by a pistol shot” () which was the way that everyone in his family experience love. It was so sudden, and he scarcely knew she was the one and they had a child together. Desiree adored Armand and their new born baby more than Armand ever did because she knew he was a decent man and he changed for the better after he met her. I believe Desiree only had true love for her parents. Armand love for Desiree was never real, he only loved the power of his family
