Calixta and Alcee are both married but to other people. They engage in infidelity and the conclusion of the affair is one that seems to make both of their individual relationships better. The affair was depicted as a necessary escape from reality. The number one reason why many women cheat is because they lack attention and intimacy. Maybe she believed she needed the affair to feel as though she was desirable again. In all the thoughts running through her mind, never did she stop to think about how her husband would feel to know that she had cheated on him. If Calixta ever did think about her husband’s feelings, then she must have thought that her feelings mattered more. To rejuvenate the spark back in Calixta and Alcees’ relationships with their partners, they felt they had to commit adultery. It was a guiltless pleasure for both parties. Mrs. Mallard is the wife of the man who has ostensibly died in a railroad disaster. Instead of feeling heartbroken, she begins to feel delight when thinking of the freedom that she will gain. Bondage should never be a term used in the same sentence as marriage, but in this story, it seems perfect. Bondage is a situation in which you do not feel free because someone or something controls your life. Mrs. Mallard felt as if her husband held her in bondage, and now that he was gone she felt as if she was free. Mrs. Mallard wanted to feel as if she was in control of her life so she was joyful to hear of her husband’s death. The picture of marriage that every little girl dreams of, is one when you grow old with the love of your life. In this story, the woman almost just couldn’t wait to be on her own again. Upon finding out that her husband did not die in this railroad disaster, she perished, along with her hopes and dreams of her newfound freedom. From what the doctors said she had a heart disease.
Throughout each story an element of corruptive selfishness ties the stories together. A lasting marriage must be a selfless journey, which means that your partners happiness is essential in your own happiness. You must love your significant other as Christ loved the church.
