It is insane how a 3 months old Baby, just because his skin color is black, becomes the main reason for tension between a husband and his wife and causes the wife along with baby to leave and disappear for the rest of the life. Before the Baby was born, everything between Armand and Desiree was fine and there was love between them. But, after the birth of their child, Armand showed his true colors and showed that he is still bounded by the outdated culture of Louisiana which is totally obscure and a narrow -minded person who still believes that color “White” is everything. It takes courage and guts to leave a husband in a region where you have no hope and still without thinking about her husband Armand and the people, Desiree chooses to leave and accepts death. Desiree was unhappy with the attitude of her husband and was really un happy with the way her husband was treating her and the baby. When Slavery was still there in America and the men had dominance in the society, thus reflects the prejudice faced by a woman whose fault was just that he had a baby of mixed race. And many men and children were slaves which was a nightmare for them. They worked in the cotton field and did farming. These jobs were considered dirty by the white people, so they made the black people slaves to do the required jobs. When Armand said to Desiree that “It means, that the child is not white; it means that you are not white” (Chopin 541). These words reflect that Armand completely ignored his wife and his baby because the baby was not white. In the story “Desiree’s baby” by Kate Chopin, Desiree has heard the life altering news that her and her baby are biracial. Desiree then proceeds to kill both of them in a swamp. I believe this was the wrong call on desiree's part. Although some might argue it was good of her to end their lives, I don’t believe this because it ended the life of the baby, and because she could of had a decent life with the Valmonde. My first claim is that it is just inhumane to kill an infant.…

Instead of giving the baby its own identity, Chopin instead uses the baby to show how two opposing forces can exist in one object. By not giving the baby his own name, readers are forced to focus more on how Désirée and Armand each project their own desires onto him. The baby represents the mixture of both races and ideas, between races that are usually positioned against each other and ideas that seem different but are actually similar. Although Désirée’s background remains a mystery throughout the entirety of the short story and Armand is well aware of his own, both individuals sought some form of validation from the…

He had pronounced his love for this women and then suddenly without much thought decided to terminate their marriage. Armand used the basis of the “hypo descent rule,” meaning that if any traces of black blood are in your ancestry you are pronounced black (Davis 1). This clearly exhibits the hatred and disgust for biracial relationships from even someone who may be involved in one. However, in the story it is later revealed that Armand is the one with true black ancestry. Early history involved many scenarios such as the one described above.…

Some people are discriminated for their skin color, wealth, country of origin, social status, etc. Sometimes this judgement reaches people who are in love. Because of this, Armand ignores her and loses all compassion for her because he is ashamed to have married someone with an inferior African American background. Soon after, Armand discovers through a letter his mother sent to his father that it is he that is part black (eastoftheweb). One example of how Kate Chopin’s life influenced this story was how Chopin grew up and lived in the south before, during, and after the civil war where even after the war; the idea of slavery and racism was a very real thing. Another example of how Chopin’s life influenced Désirée’s Baby was through her experiences with the Creole population. It’s well known that the French Creole population wasn’t completely accepting of outsiders, it’s evident in this story but also very apparent in her novel The Awakening. In all, the short story Désirée’s Baby was influenced by Kate Chopin’s experiences with the Creole population and her time in the…

First of all, Armand Aubigny fell in love with a “beautiful and gentle, affectionate and sincere” Desiree, as described by Chopin. They got married and had a baby, which helped Armand change his way of treating the slaves. Before he married Desiree and the baby’s birth, according to Chopin, Armand’s “rule was a strict one” when dealing with his slaves, and “ under it his negroes had forgotten how to be gay,” (Chopin,2). However, “ marriage and later the birth of his son had softened Armand Aubigny’s imperious and exacting nature greatly,” (Chopin, 2). Desiree says that “he hasn’t punished one of [the slaves]- not one of them- since baby is born,” which means that Armand no longer punished his slaves as badly after the baby was born, (Kate Chopin, 2).…

During the antebellum period, the men were ranked above the women. Armand was able to provide everything from her lavish “soft white muslins and laces” and Zandrine, the nanny (Chopin 86). When Armand accused her of coming from African ancestry because of their quadroon baby, Armand had the power to strip Desiree from all he had given to her because of his developed intolerance of being with anyone who has a drop of African blood. This authority above Desiree was proven when “he absented himself from home, and when there, avoided her presence and that of her child, without excuse” (Chopin 87). This baby is no longer Armand’s child but, Desiree’s baby simply because of the dark skin…
