Desire Under The Irish Observation Essay

The job of the lighting designer is to set the correct mood for that certain part of a particular scene. It wouldn't make sense if the lighting was bright and colorful and something tragic has happened. So the lighting affects everything and it is equally important just as everything else Looking at the picture of the play Luck of the Irish it shows colorful lighting but only in specific spots. It adds frame and an atmosphere when I look at the picture I think of it being a part of the Jazz Age. The second picture comes from the play Desire Under the Elms. It shows a girl who is kneeling down by a lamp that is on the table. This lighting only illuminates her face so this will be a very personal moment in time only for that specific character. Moving to the next photo with the man standing on some type of stair way and behind him in lights it says "Jesus" so one could infer that he is playing the part of the almighty God. All of the lights are shinning on him. This could make the audience infer that the character is the reason for this scene the main focus. …show more content…

In the second picture the women is standing in the room by herself. The lighting in this scene is a bright yellow-ish light shining on her and shades of pink, purple, and orange lights all around her. One could also infer that she is giving a soliloquy Lighting is just as important to a production as sound, customs, dances and other equally important things. The play follows a mother and her two daughters, their maid, and a worker on the orchard as the women of the family try to figure out a way to save their pecan orchard (El Nogalar). The family is out of money but do not want to sell the orchard to a cartel because they will just cut down the Pecan trees and plant drugs. However, if the family doesn’t sell their land then the cartels are likely to just take it.…

Lighting designer, Kevin Adams, and Scenic designer, David Korins, executed the structure of this musical in a simplistic yet creative way. My favorite element of the set design was the grand wall of distinctive lights located at the back of the stage. These lights could change color and effulgence to various levels depending on the time and place of the current scene. For example, during Stew’s time in Amsterdam, the lights were spectacular, scintillating, and colorful. This showed the promiscuous and “sexy” café culture that existed in Amsterdam during that time.…

Tim Burton incorporates the technique of lighting in another one of his films, Edward Scissorhands, to construct the distinction in the fact that Edward will always have that strange, innocent quality about him. For instance, there is high key lighting on the perfect houses in the perfect neighborhood, compared to Edward’s mansion on the hill. Enhancing the difference between Edward and everybody else. His house is dark, black, and gloomy which reflects on his personality as well. Edward doesn’t seem to speak as much as one to two words when he was getting comfortable at Peg’s house, leaving him with the peculiar aura.…

He used lighting in several scenes of the performance to captivate the audience or help explain what was happening. For example, lighting was used effectively when the Dragon was first shown in the play. Donkey was really scared and the darkness really helped show that, as well get the audience to experience that them self. The lighting was also very useful for the transitions throughout the play. It was used to show the transition between day and night when the characters were traveling.…

Wes Anderson brilliantly uses the technique of mise-en-scene throughout his film Moonrise Kingdom to create a film where each scene has a feeling of a moving painting. Anderson’s deep understanding of mise-en-scene enables him to truly have control of every single aspect in each scene that is shot in the film. Throughout the film Anderson chose to utilize very realistic and natural sources of light. In my opinion, I believe the director chose to utilize natural light sources to create a whimsical or fairytale aesthetic for the audience, as well as, to create an almost anti-realism film.…
